Review: Peregrine Harker and The Black Death
By: Luke Hollands

Description by Netgalley:

MURDER SPIES EXPLOSIONS REVENGE

Peregrine Harker is about to learn you’re never too young to die.

London 1908: A secret society stalks the murky streets, a deadly assassin lurks in the shadows and a series of unexplained deaths are linked by a mystery symbol…

My review:

Is 1908- London, Paris and India. There’s a terrible problem: the cost for tea is raising. Then, there’s Peregrine Harker, a fifteen-years-old young boy, orphan, living his life dreaming in being a wonderful spy in his dreams while in reality he’s about to lose his job as being a journalist. Jabez Challock, the editor, tells Peregrine that he has only two weeks to find out why the price of tea is raising, as this may cause a terrible problem for the day-to-day of every english man if they don’t have a cup of tea. Young Peregrine starts his search by visiting the tea trader Clayton, but everything turns upside down when he sees a coffin. Trying to see what’s inside of it, he almost gets killed by two men but is saved by no other than his cousin-brother, Archie Dearlove. Later on, while he was with Archie, the two of them see the scene of a man dying in front of everyone while they were eating- when they decided to try and capture the man that Peregrine thought that killed them, he took a paper from the dead’s man hand that consisted of a triangle inside of a circle inside of a square…Then, he tries to talk to a man that wanted to help him, only to find him dead with the same paper and symbol. The Black Death symbol; haunting both Peregrine and Sir Magnus Clayton, they have to stop the one behind all that before they are both dead. But, there are some secrets the young Peregrine didn’t thought of knowing, nor the young and beautiful daughter of Sir Magnus, Louisa. This is the beginning of a young adventurer.

Who is Peregrine Harker?

-He is a young boy of fifteen years old. Both his parents went missing while exploring the Orinoco River in South America. He went to different boarding schools; then went to live for a while with his cousin Archie, and before they took him back to a boarding school he run away to London, in where he lived in a small apartment in Soho and worked as a journalist.
-Skills: Fencing, pistol marksmanship, horse riding, fast thinking.
-I think he’s skinny (for the moment) and with long hair.

Archie Dearlove:(may contain spoilers)

-Is the son of Sir Oliphant Dearlove ( he was the captain in the Royal Navy).
-He may be five years older than Peregrine; being twenty years old. He had a beamin smile and piercing eyes.
-At first we were told that he was Lieutenant Archie Dearlove of His Majesty’s Royal Navy; but later on he tells Peregrine the truth- he works for the Naval Intelligence, being a spy.
-Skills: Fencing, pistol marksmanship, horse riding, fast thinking, good at keeping secrets, good at making plans.
-He was truly a good friend.

Ignatius Woolfe:

-Works as a: butler.
-Appearance: Short, tough, with a condescending face, hawk-like nose.
-Skills: Pistol marksmanship, Riding (vehicles, motors or anything new), very intelligent, fast, fast thinking.

Sir Magnus Clayton:

-He was the owner of the Indus Star Importation Company.
-Appearance: Dark hair, face of kindness.
-Skills: Pistol Marksmanship, Riding, very intelligent, maker of weapons (such as guns).

SPOILER:

Why was the price of tea rising?

-Because, after all, Sir Magnus Clayton, being the villain of this story, was trying to import the last of his gold from India. He had a brother named Richard Clayton (the two of them killed each other), the two of them were poor, so they decided to enlist in the army. While Richard followed his duty, Magnus always wanted fortune and glory. When the two of them went in duty for India they felt in love with the most beautiful girl in Northen India, named Kitty Blackmore. Richard, married and had a daughter with her and when his brother Magnus found out he planned to make a revenge making a pact with Sanghar Khan. Sangar Khan, being an orphan he was taken by the religious band ( or cult) called The Brotherhood of the Black Death. They worshipped the Hindu deity Kali, the god of death and destruction, which made them experts and specialist in lethal poisons and razor-sharp blades. When Magnus went to get revenge the end was that Kitty was killed, he took their child, and almost killed Richard; which he came back to kill them all.

 My thoughts:

It was a pretty good book, but, it was slow-paced… which I don’t like that much. Also, all the names of the places they went were confusing. There’s also the question of if there’s going to be another adventure and if we will ever know what happened with Peregrine’s parents. But overall it was a pretty good twist in the end. Thanks NETGALLEY for the book!

                                                                            4/5!!!!!!!!!!

Born at Midnight

Born at Midnight (Shadow Falls, #1)

One night Kylie Galen finds herself at the wrong party, with the wrong people, and it changes her life forever. Her mother ships her off to Shadow Falls—a camp for troubled teens, and within hours of arriving, it becomes painfully clear that her fellow campers aren’t just “troubled.” Here at Shadow Falls, vampires, werewolves, shapshifters, witches and fairies train side by side—learning to harness their powers, control their magic and live in the normal world.

Kylie’s never felt normal, but surely she doesn’t belong here with a bunch of paranormal freaks either. Or does she? They insist Kylie is one of them, and that she was brought here for a reason. As if life wasn’t complicated enough, enter Derek and Lucas. Derek’s a half-fae who’s determined to be her boyfriend, and Lucas is a smokin’ hot werewolf with whom Kylie shares a secret past. Both Derek and Lucas couldn’t be more different, but they both have a powerful hold on her heart.
Even though Kylie feels deeply uncertain about everything, one thing is becoming painfully clear—Shadow Falls is exactly where she belongs…

SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love the pattern thing in their heads that shows what kind of creature you are. I really like her acttitude and of course her room mates are just funny xD!. This is a fabulous book. Derek’s a beautiful fae and I love his feeling; he gives you peace, comfort and you feel safe with him… but there’s Lucas that to my shock they knew each other!!!!! he’s HOT and a rebel werewolf which attracts every sense of us; and I like how he is too! so I know how she feels of choosing to be with.

The most important thing about this book is that she’s looking for answers to know what she is. She doesn’t know what she is and the book ends with knowing that the man she always called adad is not her dad but the ghost she decides to talk… whom has the same unique pattern that she has and knowing that Lucas is gone……………………………………………..

Dreamhouse Kings book #1: HOUSE OF DARK SHADOWS
By: Robert Liparulo
When the Kings move from L.A. to a secluded small town, fifteen-year-old Xander is beyond disappointed. He and his friends loved to create amateur films . . . but the tiny town of Pinedale is the last place a movie buff and future filmmaker wants to land.

But he, David, and Toria are captivated by the many rooms in the old Victorian fixer-upper they moved into–as well as the heavy woods surrounding the house.

They soon discover there’s something odd about the house. Sounds come from the wrong directions. Prints of giant, bare feet appear in the dust. And when David tries to hide in the linen closet, he winds up in locker 119 at his new school.

Then the really weird stuff kicks in: they find a hidden hallway with portals leading off to far-off places–in long-ago times. Xander is starting to wonder if this kind of travel is a teen’s dream come true . . . or his worst nightmare.
(Goodreads)

My review: ( SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
It all starts with them in a car saying how uncomfortable they are waiting to get to the new place they were heading. I didn’t liked the bear that Toria had; it was so psycho that girl with the bear but in the end ( of this bok) it kind of help having the bear around, since it recorded something the man that took their mother said. At first I didn’t knew what the first pages of the book (when it was 30-thirty years ago) ment, but at the end I knew and it’s just sad. I also thought it was going to be a scary story, but it turns out it’s about portals and rooms with portals and that is cool… not scary but cool. When they find for first time one of the portals and they are like in 5 seconds in their school, I was like WHOA when/how/ WHAT? and well that was just pretty darn weird. Anyway this book made me sad when their father told them he was the kid of seven years old trying to the same they were doing: save their mom… so I think this new adventure is about looking for their mom and if they can their grandmother too, whom I think that big stupid man, that is like damn immortal xD, took too. I’m looking forward to know MORE! And well the adventures were kind of cool, besides being scary and OH I liked that their parents gave them posters related to their name 😉 and lol David’s one was naked hahaha.

FABLEHAVEN book #1
By: Brandon Mull

Review by goodreads:

For centuries mystical creatures of all description were gathered into a hidden refuge called Fablehaven to prevent their extinction. The sanctuary survives today as one of the last strongholds of true magic. Enchanting? Absolutely. Exciting? You bet. Safe? Well, actually, quite the opposite.

Kendra and her brother, Seth, have no idea that their grandfather is the current caretaker of Fablehaven. Inside the gated woods, ancient laws keep relative order among greedy trolls, mischievous satyrs, plotting witches, spiteful imps, and jealous fairies. However, when the rules get broken — Seth is a bit too curious and reckless for his own good — powerful forces of evil are unleashed, and Kendra and her brother face the greatest challenge of their lives. To save their family, Fablehaven, and perhaps even the world, Kendra and Seth must find the courage to do what they fear most.

My review!!

I really thought it was going to be kind of a boring book because it did start with a slow start and I was like when will they ever going to get there. The thing is since the moment the kids where in their grandfather house I liked it! I mean come on! is a very big house for kids where you can do whatever you can- WAIT! there is this place called Fablehaven where there are trolls, satyrs, witches, fairies… not the cute one but the “mean” ones too!.

To see the fairies you have to drink a special milk and there is this mirror where the fairies love to see themselves in it. One of parts I liked was when the grandfather told Kendra to look where the keys he gave her can open stuff like a doll house and such and she finds a diary where it says something…. BUT YOU HAVE TO READ THE BOOK muahahaha.

And their grandmother was the chicken! at least they saved her… anyway it is an awesome fantasy book so you should read this start of an adventure where seen witches and big bad troll is something kind of common. Good read <3!
